What is The Monday Update?

One of the things that I’ve come to realize is that following the news can be rather overwhelming for the regular person. We live in a time where everyday is a “breaking news” story, and with a fractured media environment it’s difficult to know where to start. Couple that with the fact that younger generations are increasingly getting their “news” from increasingly questionable social media sites, and it’s a recipe for people not really knowing what’s going on.

I think that most people, if given the opportunity, would rather be informed than ignorant. We just happen to live in a world where it’s difficult to do so without a very active and conscious effort to seek out reliable information and perspectives, or to even know what stories to focus on.

So, here's how this is going to work. Each week, I’ll try to write about something that’s in the current news landscape that’s a bit more of a complicated topic where you really want to be getting more perspective than just a Facebook post or TikTok video about it.

My hope is that this will help people feel less lost in the sea of information (and misinformation) out there, gain some confidence in their ability to understand current events, and not be caught unprepared when these topics might come up in conversations with others.

Sometimes keeping up with the news can seem overwhelming. But it's better to be a little informed than not at all. Here, I try to take whatever is an important story or issue, and attempt to put in context for the folks who aren't news junkies.

Just a random Midwest guy who cares a lot about the importance of civic participation and is deeply concerned about our country's democratic future. I write for the people in my life, and anyone else who cares to read it.
